🎓 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must meet the following educational and professional requirements:

1. Educational Qualification:

   • Must be a Law Graduate from a recognized university.

   • Must possess a Degree in Law and be a registered legal practitioner.

2. Experience:

   • Preference will be given to:

     • Retired Public Prosecutors (PP)

     • Retired Assistant Public Prosecutors (APP)

     • Advocates who have previously served on government legal panels

     • Candidates with expertise in criminal law

3. Age Limit:

   • Maximum age: 64 years as on the date of engagement.

🧾 Responsibilities & Nature of Work

The selected Legal Consultants will provide expert legal advice to investigating officers (IOs) in criminal matters. Their primary responsibilities include:

A) In Cases Where FIR Has Been Registered:

• Advising IOs from FIR registration to charge sheet filing.

• Assisting in drafting legal documents and papers.

• Providing guidance in bail matters and other court proceedings including those in High Courts and the Supreme Court.

• Assisting in the preparation of expert opinion questionnaires (e.g. for CFSL or medical reports).

• Sharing relevant case law and landmark judgments with officers.

• Helping interpret laws, statutory rules, and amendments.

• Ensuring accuracy in Final Reports to improve conviction rates.

B) Miscellaneous Legal Support:

• Drafting replies to notices from statutory bodies or Commissions.

• Preparing responses for writs, SLPs, and other litigation-related documents.

Note: The Legal Consultant will strictly provide legal advice only to police officers. No direct investigative role will be assigned.

The selection will be done in a fair and transparent manner:

2. Shortlisted candidates will be called for a personal interview.

3. Interviews will be conducted by a three-member committee, depending on the unit:

   • Commissionerate: CP + DCP + Legal Adviser/eminent Lawyer

   • District: SP + Addl. SP + Legal Adviser/eminent Lawyer

   • Other Units: DIGP + SP + Legal Adviser/eminent Lawyer

Final selection lists will be forwarded to the ADG & IGP (Legal), West Bengal Police, for formal approval.
